On March 20, 1979, the Government of Assam allocated a plot of land measuring 10 bighas in the area of Ulubari, Guwahati. With the dedicated efforts of monks, lay-devotees and well-wishers, this land was transformed into a substantial temple complex featuring a Prayer Hall, a two-storied building with the “Saradeswari Library” and “Vivekananda Hall,” a Residential Students’ Home, Monks’ Quarters, and an Administrative Building. The main temple, an architectural marvel, was consecrated to Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna Deva on February 29, 1988, by the Most Revered Srimat Swami Gambhiranandaji Maharaj, the 11th President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math.
The roots of the Ramakrishna Movement in Guwahati were established in the soil of Chatribari shortly after the Birth Centenary of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna Deva. In 1939, a Study Circle evolved into the “Ramakrishna Seva Samity.” The Guwahati Municipal Corporation provided a plot of land at Chatribari on lease, and the Samity commenced its spiritual and philanthropic endeavors from this location. In 1968, the Headquarter of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, affiliated the Seva Samity as one of its Branch Centres, renaming it as “Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Guwahati.” Over the years, the activities expanded in spiritual and philanthropic realms. The Chatribari premises now house a Charitable Dispensary offering free/ subsidized medical treatment to all, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
