“Education is the panacea of all evil”. It is the way through which the socio-economic condition of India might be improved. It gives a chance to gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve their lives. With rapid growth of population, shortages of teachers, books and basic facilities and insufficient public funds the children of India are facing these basic as well as toughest challenges. Among these the girl child education is a serious social issues that requires immediate attention. The practice of child labour in India and resistance to sending girls to school in several parts of the country still remain as grave concerns.
Underprivileged children are at a higher risk for various short-term and long-term complications as they experience several macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies since the time of birth.
Keeping the abovementioned socio-economic conditions in mind, in the year 2010, Swami Anantanandaji Maharaj, on the instruction of Belur Math, the headquarter of Ramakrishna Mission, started Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa (GAP), the TCS funded project at Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Guwahati. Underprivileged and poor students (both boys' and girls') of backward classes of adjacent localities are provided with free nutritious food and health care facilities. Besides free tuitions, books and other study materials and dresses etc. are provided free to them. Music, cultural education and yoga etc. are imparted to them for the all round development of their character. Around 100 students from class I to class VII are given nutritious food and drinks after regular coaching. Compulsory medical checkup once in a month and treatment & medication in case of any ailments are provided free to them.
Similar project has been started for the benefit of the children of the tea garden labours around Borgaon village, Nellie by Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Guwahati. Local Ramakrishna Sevashrama helps running this project while it's funded by NIACL.
